What is Yoga?

In this modern day and age, everyone has heard of the word “Yoga”, it is almost so common that we don’t even think twice about what it means. We all are familiar with the strange cultural exercise that twists the body into odd shapes, right? It may even conjure up images of men clad in white gowns meditating and making funny noises. So what exactly does it all mean?

Commercialism has made the term Yoga a household name, using it to sell various household items, beauty products and let’s not forget exercise merchandise. This is one of the many reasons many people think of the practices of Yoga as an American form of exercise.

Yoga is so much more than an exercise program. Developed 3 thousand centuries ago in India, the word Yoga means to “untie as one” or “coming together.” The practice of Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices. Its main goal is to help people become one with their inner beings to extend their lives and improve their quality of life.
Yoga is a science in that it helps one learn the scientific aspects of their own lives and the universe we live in. Through the many practices, it can become a way of life, being that it helps people live a very harmonious existence.

As an exercise practice, Yoga strengthens the body, but very few people understand the mental exercises that Yoga teaches as well. The key to our physical beings can be reached through our minds. Releasing negative thoughts and learning to let go of obstacles that keep us grounded can ultimately help our physical beings as well.

Practicing Yoga helps us achieve a higher state of being, if you will. A place where it becomes easier to chose a healthier lifestyle and the healthier path to promote longevity. Yoga extends into a person entire life, and for that reason, it is known more as a state of being than as just an exercise program.

“Developed 3 thousand centuries ago in India” Did you really mean to say 300 thousand years ago?
